You once asked me why I didn't just have it off with some girl at a Quidditch party.

[doggedly]

[A beat of silence.]

And? I mean, we're friends, Remus, that's the sort of things friends ask one another!

It's not the sort of thing you ask me.

[doggedly]

Oh, come off it--why, because you're so mature and above me and all that? I've asked James far worse, of girls he was actually dating--that was nothing. That was a sincere offer of help.

Seriously, Remus, it's like you're from a different country sometimes.

Oh, that's nice!

[doggedly]

Oh, I didn't mean it badly. I love your other country. I love you.

[theshabbiestofmen]

I'll keep that in mind the next time you tell me you don't understand me, shall I.

[doggedly]

Don't be a girl. If you really don't want advice and things, I won't give it to you. Just say that.

That's not what I-- forget it. Where are you, then?

On a couch, in one of these lounges. I was asleep, nearly, but I think I'd have nightmares if I tried now. Why, where are you?

In our room. Just-- never mind. I'll talk to you later.

[doggedly]

[oh, yeah, right, never mind--]

What is it?

[theshabbiestofmen]

Later. If you don't mind.

[doggedly]

[He's quiet a moment, and then:]

I'll be back in five minutes, anyways, you can just say then.

[theshabbiestofmen]

Then I'll say then. It's nothing huge, Sirius, don't worry about it.

[doggedly]

Then you'd think you'd be able to just say it.

[But, anyways. About ten minutes later and he does come back to the room, shrugging off his jacket and slumping onto his bed face-first, with a huge sigh. After a moment, he turns his head to look for Remus.]

Hullo.

[theshabbiestofmen]

Hi.

[He'd been reading restlessly; his book is tossed on his bed-- and now he rolls to his side, considering Sirius.]

Tired, then?

[doggedly]

Terribly.

[He cocks his head at Remus, trying to catch sight of that book.]

What's that you're reading?

[theshabbiestofmen]

Something about civil wars. I don't know, it's boring. What are you tired from?

[doggedly]

This bloody ship. Not being ill anymore. Climbing trees. Thinking really hard. Harassing people. So, the usual, really.

[He presses his face against his pillow for a moment again, then twists back to look at Remus once more.]

So what is it?

[theshabbiestofmen]

[It feels girlish, acting like this, confiding his worries in Sirius-- but only a little. Not enough to stop him from staring over at his friend and murmuring:]

Raven. In short. Her latest post.

[doggedly]

[And at that, he shoves himself up onto his elbows, watching Remus closely.]

What about her?

[theshabbiestofmen]

I'm scared she'll do something rash. Something irresponsible, just because she's jumping at the bit for action. And I sympathize, I do, but . . . I just don't think there's anyone out there.

[doggedly]

But we don't know that. I mean-- you can't blame her for it.

[Though he's still studying Remus closely even as he says that.]
